As a chef it is really important that people feel safe and excited about you. If people don't have a positive attitude towards you they will not feel safe eating your food and if they are not excited about you they will not want to spend money on your food.
So, how do we help people feel good about us, even when they have never met us? Photography! Portrait photography is a powerful tool for advertising yourself to others and selling yourself while never coming face to face with your customers. Through this section you will learn how to take quality portraits and you will end this unit with a professional looking portrait for your website. |
Step #1: Find Quality Portrait Examples
Let's begin by searching Google for portrait photography examples. Right away you will find that some stick out to you while others seems less attractive or exciting. Find 5 portrait photos that are really exciting to you. Also, find two photos that don't seem as quality.
Save the files to your desktop and turn them in by submitting them in the assignment dropbox.

As you can see from your research in step 1, some portraits stand out while others look average. Professional photographers are trained to think about photography in special ways. Lets learn some tips that will help us take professional quality portraits.
First, do some research. Google "How to take Quality Portraits" or simply "portrait photography". Your job will be to write down 5 tips or rules that you learn.

Step #3: Find Quality Chef Portraits
Its time to look at turning the camera and your photography skills on our main subject, the chef. Find 5 high quality and interesting portraits of chefs online. For each, name at least one "tip" that was used to make this image.
Save the images to your folder and submit your top two photos to the dropbox (see step 1).

Step #4: Brainstorm Your Portrait
Now that you know quite a bit about portrait photography, lets turn the camera on you. Your goal will be to produce a quality chef portrait of yourself to go on your chef website. Use the skills you've learned to create a creative and professional portrait.

Shutter Speed
Shutter speed determines how long the shutter is open and how much light gets to the camera sensor. Shutter speed is measured in seconds. Fast shutter speeds are fractions of a second (for example 1/100 means the shutter opens and closes in 1/100 of a second).
